Throughout her creative process, Sarah moves toward, into, and through situations of tension, considering what can be unearthed through mining the vulnerable and the risky as options for moving through the world. Her choreography highlights both tenuous and pleasurable aspects of human relationships, placing mundane interactions in conversation with whimsy and spectacle. Drawing upon contact improvisation techniques, she incorporates falling and weight sharing as physical manifestations of these interactions. She choreographs mainly duet and group works, for spaces ranging from shadowy attics, to proscenium theaters, to kitchens. Sarah carries a deep care for audiences—she strives to inspire audience empathy, pulling spectators closer to the work. She believes that physical conversations between breathing bodies can open us up to new options for how to exist with one another.
